Causes and Solutions for Threaded Fastening Troubles: Galling (Seizing)
We will introduce the phenomenon where bolts and nuts become stuck and cannot be removed.
This article introduces the issues related to screw fastening in heat exchangers and piping, specifically the causes and solutions for "galling (seizing)." There are many factors said to contribute to galling, such as materials that are prone to galling, differences in thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion rates. However, galling occurs when the female and male threads rub against each other while tightening, generating frictional heat that causes the threads to momentarily melt, solidify, and seize. Therefore, the method of tightening that generates this frictional heat can be considered the fundamental cause of galling. As a solution, there is a "tensioning method" that allows for fastening without rotation. This fastening method enables tightening and loosening without rotation, thus preventing galling.
